Because Oblivion is primarily pure science fiction, based on the graphic novel of the same name written by the director of Oblivion, Joseph Kosinski, who tried his hand even before with the science fiction film "Tron Legacy".

In Oblivion, Cruise plays Jack Harper, one of the last mechanics responsible for the drones on Earth. It's part of a massive operation aimed at extracting vital resources after decades at war with the terrifying threat of the Scavs. But Jack's mission comes to an end, and then he has to face the past and decide whether to take the path of redemption to fight to save the human race.
